About the Author
John Walter Hill is a professor of musicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Musicological Society from 1984 until 1986 and serves on a number of international boards and committees. He is the author of many articles and books, including The Life and Works of Francesco Maria Veracini, Vivaldi’s Ottone in villa: A Study in Musical Drama, and Roman Monody, Cantata, and Opera from the Circles around Cardinal Montalto, 2 vols.. Articles by and about Professor Hill appear in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart.

Thorough, solid textbook

Many have awaited this final volume in the new Norton Music History Series. Manfred Bukofzer's volume in the original series was written in 1947 - clearly, much has been discovered since then.

Hill's text is designed to be for upper level music majors, as the writing can become quite dense. The book begins with an introduction of the social and political factors shaping Europe during the Baroque Era. Other chapters cover the birth of opera and monody, new genres of instrumental music, and other subjects, generally switching back in between France, Italy, England, and Germany (Spain and Portugal are also included in a chapter).

Great aspects about Hill's book first. The scholarship is excellent, and is as thorough (if not more so) than any other Baroque textbook out there. His bibliographical notes at the end of the chapter (as in the other books from the series) are wonderfully helpful. The description on the Doctrine of the Affections is as clear and informative as I've ever seen. His brief explanation of dance steps and tempo descriptions reminds me of Leonard Ratner's book on topics and is an excellent resource. The optional Anthology can prove to be very helpful for teaching or illustrating Hill's explanations as well.

Here are the things I think readers may not like as much, though I was not able to find many. The reading is dense and can be difficult to follow with interest at times, which is not surprising for a 500-page upper-level textbook. Of the books in the Norton Series, I found several other author's writings to be of much lighter prose than Hill's, including Hoppin's tome on Medieval music. Many others will argue over the relative weight of importance of some composers in the textbook (there are many second-tier Italian composers, and Bach only gets about 25 pages), but I believe that any professor worth his/her salt will be easily solve this difficulty by supplementing the text with a few other materials.

Though I would not rank this book as the best in the series, I do think it is certainly an improvement from Bukofzer and Claude Palisca's Prentice Hall textbook (not bad, but much less thorough). Any upper-level course on Baroque music should consider adopting Hill's text and Anthology.

Difficult to read and it feels a little 'dry' at times but this is the best book I've read on the baroque period and is pretty comprehensive.

This was the worst book that I have ever had for a 101 course due to the layout of this book (no highlighted text, etc). To be fair, my opinion is bias because of the difficulty of the Music Therapy class that I attended.

Very clear and thorough

My first (and probably only) music therapy course used this book as it's text. I am a musician, so I'm coming from that perspective. However, there is surprisingly little information on here as far as music skills. The assumption is that those skills are developed outside of this particular class.

The author gets into the specifics of a wide range of disabilities, disorders and conditions. The way the brain processed music is presented in a thorough, yet (relatively) simplistic way. It's a detailed study, and not just a bunch of fun facts, so you have to be ready to take the time to research.

The questions at the end of the chapters provided an excellent review for each class, and the book was well organized. I would certainly recommend both the book, as well as a Music Therapy class to anyone with any interest.

This book is good for reviewing and studying for the music therapy exam after you've finished your program. I skimmed most of it, and passed the exam with flying colors. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to solidly prepare for the CBMT exam.

Not for the traveler

This book is an excellent overview of the Sicilian language/dialect, but it is NOT designed as a "traveler's guide" to the language. The lessons are set up in an "immersion approach", providing the Sicilian dialog and THEN following with an English translation; so, it is a little hard to get started. But, once begun, the progress flows quickly and an elemental grasp of the language soon follows. It is not full of "traveler phrases", but the understanding the reader gains from study of the book should provide ample capability regardless of their original intent.

This book gives a good introduction to the Sicilian language

This book is not your typical language instruction book. It has a brief description of customs and culture, which is nice. However, the chapters often repeat themselves, so it could have been better organized into chapters that have distinct lessons and progressively get more complex (like most language books). This book stays at a fairly basic level throughout, however, it accomplishes its purpose, which is to give a taste of Sicilian.

Okay introduction to Sicilian

Dr. Privitera does a decent job of introducing basic Sicilian in this book. Each chapter begins with a conversation in Sicilian, followed by the English translation, and then it moves on to the vocabulary used in the chapter. After the vocabulary comes a brief grammar lesson. The conversations are not very creative, and I can't imagine Sicilians actually having conversations like some of the ones used. Like another reviewer said, the chapters are a bit repetitive, but I think that's intended in order to enforce memorization. The only problem I had with book is that there wasn't enough grammar provided. I wish he went into more detail about verbs, and that he had provided some grammar about prepositional contractions. I managed to come to the conclusion on my own that a circumflex signified a contraction, but this was never actually explained. Another problem is that people who don't have a knowledge of Italian might get lost quickly. All in all, however, I've learned quite a bit of Sicilian, and thanks to this book I can now communicate with my Sicilian friends in their own dialect, instead of standard Italian.

The book is easy to follow and the hands-on exercies really help solidify the concepts in your head. HUGE book - how many pounds does this thing weigh? A must-read for those who've never used DOS but want to learn.

Not for Administrators in a Corporate environment

If your need is a "classroom in a book" on basic command line operation - then this book may be for you as it is filled with examples and labs (although $... is a bit steep for the privilege). However, administrators in corporate environments will find the book too simplistic for their needs.

Small things in big packages.

This book is easy to follow. It will help you get a feel for MS DOS, it is for the true beginner of DOS. It is not for the seasoned DOS expert, cause it is too simple. I was a true beginner at DOS, used this book for an independent "command line" class at college. Do not let the colorless text fool you.

While not "pretty" like other books, it has some good knowledge to be had. I had much success with it.

This book has one huge drawback - As you go thru the exercises, altering files, moving files to other directories, and so forth, each chapter depends on what you did in the previous one. If you mess up bad enough and do not have a backup of your work, you will get into a mess. You HAVE to go thru this book in sequence for things to work right. Take all instructions and warnings serious.

Be careful with what you learn tho, and heed the authors warnings, cause thru DOS, it is easy to wipe out tons of files on any drive with a few simple keystrokes. You will "know enough to get into trouble" with certain things.

NEVER experiment with DELETE commands (DEL) while on your hard drive if you are not sure what you are doing.

Excellent book for anyone wants to get basic and fundamental information on epidemiology and study designs. This book provides useful formula and practical examples on how to measure outcomes, exposures, incidence of diseases, etc, and on how to control confounding in cohort and case-control studies. These formula and measurements are not usually well explained in the books I have read before.

About the Author
Jean-Jacques Petter (1927-2002) was a world authority on lemurs and one of France's leading primatologists. He was a research fellow at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris. Fran�ois Desbordes is one of France's premier wildlife illustrators. Robert Martin is the A. Watson Armour III Curator of Biological Anthropology at the Field Museum in Chicago.

Wonderful pictures but severely lacking in coverage and slightly behind

I must say I was expecting a little more when I purchased this book. I already have the third volume of the "Handbook of the Mammals of the World" published by Lynx, which is essentially a complete monograph of primates with detailed introduction of every family and species accounts for every species currently known. As great as the HMW is, it is extremely bulky, the text is more geared towards the scientific community, the art is slightly lackluster, and it is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. However, all of this can be looked over considering how complete the book is given the time it was published. When I bought "Primates of the World", I was not expecting nearly as much detail as a HMW. I was expecting something more akin to "Carnivores of the World" also published by Princeton where it will will be a more affordable version of the HMW with a shorter introduction, simpler text (I didn't want to feel like I'm doing research every time I read it since I do enough of that already) and brief species accounts of every species of primate. That is not the case. There is a fairly lengthy reader-friendly introduction followed by wonderfully illustrated species accounts. the art is at least 2 times better than those found in the HMW. HOWEVER, the species coverage is SEVERELY lacking. Out of 17 species of dwarf mouse lemurs, it only illustrates 3, out of the 12 species of capuchins, it only shows 4, out of 9 species of howlers it only shows 4 and so on. In addition, it doesn't even acknowledge the new species discoveries. The new mouse lemurs I can understand because those discoveries are VERY recent but the Lesula and the Stryker's Snub-nosed monkey weren't even mentioned yet HMW included species accounts for BOTH despite being published BEFORE "Primates of the World". If you are just a casual reader hoping to learn some general primate knowledge and enjoys great art, then this is the perfect book for you. If want a complete guide of the primate order, then this book is severely lacking.

magnificently illustated and informative guide to the primates

This volume is exceptional in a number of different ways. The illustrations are absolutely outstanding and stunning. So life-like, one expects to sense the softness of the fur or for them to almost jump off the page. They are truly gorgeous and accurate works of art and zoology. Not only is no other primate book, I know of, and I have quite a few, so well illustrated, including the new one in the Handbook of the Mammals (HBM) of the series by Lynx Publications, but this book is a tiny fraction of the price. Granted it is not meant to be an detailed tome on each family, let alone each species, as is the HBM volume, but it is worth anyone's while, who loves beautifully illustrated and informative works on any subject, particularly within the natural history lexicon.

Additionally the text is very helpful in understanding the various families of primates (man is excluded) and the maps are also unique and excellent. Different species, but related, often are shown on the same map but each is very carefully color-coded to have its range clearly shown (the quality of these maps is virtually unique in ANY natural history guide).

Don't pass this exceptional book up! You will enjoy and cherish it as a special entry in the universe of guides on nature.

Beautiful account of our closest relatives

If you like primates and savor good, breathtaking illustrations, this book is for you. While the new handbook of the primates of the world contains very good photos and an insane amount of information, what "Primates of the world" has to offer is a relatively cheap, well informative (gives you very good general instructions and suggests books for futher reading) and beautifully illustrated book.
The plates have an accurate level of detail, and, for the species I know in real life, I could not find any mistakes. Moreover, the illustrator depicts the animal in real life position, which, for me, is a plus.

About the Author

Marti Snell is a Professor at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia where she prepares teachers of students with disabilities. Her research and writing address positive behavior support, communication, inclusion, and data-based decision making. She is the author of a series of four books with Rachel Janney: Teachers’ Guides to Inclusive Practices (Behavioral Support, Collaborative Teaming, Modifying Schoolwork, Social Relationships and Peer Support). She is an author on the upcoming Intellectual disability: Definition, classification, and systems of supports (11th ed.) for the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Dr. Fredda Brown is Professor in the Programs in Special Education at Queens College, City University of New York.� She is the Director of the Queens College Regional Center on Autism and Related Disabilities, and past Editor-in-Chief of Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities (RPSD). �In addition to Dr. Brown’s work as a Professor and teacher educator, she has spent many years providing educational and behavioral consultation to individuals with severe disabilities and their families.� She is the editor of four books, and author of numerous journal articles and book chapters relating to the education of individuals with severe disabilities.� Most recently her work focuses on the relationship between problem behavior, communication, and self-determination, and professional attitudes regarding behavioral treatment acceptability. Dr. Brown is on several Editorial Boards, including the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions (JPBI), and RPSD, and is on the national Board of Directors of the Association for Positive Behavior Supports (APBS). She presents her work and ideas nationwide to professionals and families, advocating for positive, dignified and effective methods of addressing the learning and behavioral needs of individuals with disabilities.

A great pro-inclusion textbook

This was my Special Ed textbook in 1997 and I was looking forward to this sixth edition. It's very comprehensive and covers a wide range of topics relating to students with severe disabilities. My only reservation here is that the book is so pro-inclusion, it's really presenting a very biased viewpoint. Hypothetical students are all happily enrolled in mainstream settings where they make great educational gains because they're exposed to typical peers, who of course accept them wholeheartedly and benefit from their presence. A little unrealistic I feel.

The information is accurate and useful

Strengths: The information is useful and it is a good resource. I have begun to put tabs on pages for future reference.

Weaknesses: This book presents poorly, it appears to be a new printing of an old book. The material presented would be easier to take in and retain, in fewer words.

I also feel that it would make the book easier to read through if there were more visual supports, for example: charts, pictures, graphs, and internet links.
