About the Author
Ellen E. Pastorino (Ph.D. in School Psychology, Florida State University) is a developmental psychologist who teaches psychology classes at Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Pastorino has won numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia, Board of Regents Distinguished Professor; the NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award; and Valencia's Teaching and Learning Excellence Award. She also serves as a reviewer for the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching. Dr. Pastorino has authored test banks, instructor manuals, and student study guides, and has published research in the Journal of Adolescent Research and Adolescence. While working as a consultant for IBM Corporation she developed numerous educational materials for teachers and students.

Susann M. Doyle-Portillo (Ph.D., social cognition, University of Oklahoma) is professor of psychology at Gainesville College, Dr. Susann M. Doyle-Portillo earned her Ph.D. in Social Cognition from the University of Oklahoma. She holds bachelors degrees in engineering and psychology. She has published articles in the journals Social Cognition and Contemporary Social Psychology, but the main focus of her career is teaching. During her tenure at Gainesville College, Dr. Doyle-Portillo has twice been listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. She has supervised independent-study student research at the two-year college level and is the founder of the Division of Social Sciences and Education Annual Research Poster Competition at Gainesville College. She also is the chair of the Scientific Review Committee/Institutional Review Board for the Gainesville College Engineering and Science Fair. She has authored test banks, instructor manuals, and student study guides.

Great book, but received instructors edition

Said in description I would be receiving the student edition, when it arrived I removed the white tape to find it was covering up that it was actually an instructors copy. Thankfully the chapters still match up, and the book was in excellent condition.

REALLY!! April in OR

This was an okay read. I didn't feel the connection between Natalie and Wyatt, it was like it was all one sided on Natalie's part, yes I know that Wyatt is a private person and has been burned from a previous relationship but come on, it just ridiculous how they hooked up finally. **SPOILER** Natalie's sister goes missing and during this time Wyatt is really pushing Natalie to have sex with him, which she did! (Your sister is missing and now you decide to have sex with him??!!) Another thing that annoyed me was that he was implying that Natalie was not well educated (Natalie kept calling herself stupid) thats why she was acting like she was when she was around Wyatt, something about this story bothered me, my opinion I know. I've liked some of LW's other books but so far this one was not there for me, wished that I didn't pay $3.59 for it, it felt more like a .99 cent story to me.

Worthwhile author

I can't help but like Leitha Wards- her books are like down-home goodness. They might not be torrid but they do have heat and passion. There is a certain sweetness about her heroines that one cannot help but like. I also will admit that there have been a few times that cause a little clenching around my heart at some of the situations because as 'corny' as they might seem on the outside, inside every girl/woman has felt the emotions of uncertainty and self-deprecation when it comes to a romantic interest.

The only thing kind of stopping me from giving her books 5 stars is that I wish whomever edits her books would do a better job. Sounds trivial, but to see 'your' when 'you're' should be used, or 'to' when 'too' should be used casts a pall on her talent. Also, her editor should pay more attention to paragraph formations.

BUT, even with all that I will still read her books. I just love her characters and HEA that they work so hard for.

Surprise -- I Think This Hero is Bipolar

This is the story of Wyatt and Natalie. Like many of Ms. Wards` heroines, Natalie is a virgin who has lusted after an older alpha male for years. Typically, Wyatt has ignored her all this time.

Ms. Ward is a good story-teller. There are the usual problems with editing, but there is often an interesting plot. In this book, however, the secondary characters are much more likeable and interesting than the hero and heroine. There are some funny moments with Wyatt`s brother and his parents. Natalie`s sister, is a strong character. I found her much easier to connect with than Natalie.

Natalie is all over the place emotionally. Given her upbringing, it is natural that she would be insecure. It would be nice if she had developed more of a backbone in her twenty years. Sadly, even when she speaks her mind, she ends up feeling guilty. We are told repeatedly that Natalie isn`t stupid. Then the author has her saying calfs instead of calves. Sheesh, you don`t have to live in the middle of cattle country to know that one. Wyatt, of course, is quick to correct her. That being said, Natalie is not the major irritant in this book.

The problem is Wyatt. After having given Natalie her first very passionate kiss, he is angry that she has confused protectiveness as affection. Hey, big boy! If you are just feeling protective, get your tongue out of her mouth and your hand off her butt!

Once Wyatt confirms she is a virgin, he ditches her at a rodeo. "I don`t seduce virgins," he said finally not liking to explain himself. "They`re too damn needy." Two hours later, he has her pinned against a wall and seduces her. Mixed messages, anyone? Natalie is left feeling like she will never see him again. This is perceptive, since Wyatt considers not calling again. He spent the night trying to figure out "how to end this nicely." In fact, if there hadn`t been an urgent family crisis, that one night could have been the end of the whole relationship.

A little ambivalence or confusion on the part of either the hero or heroine is fine. Having Wyatt completely reverse his beliefs every couple of hours makes no sense. It`s certainly not romantic. Wyatt blames Natalie for the seduction, saying she was "so damn sexy." Eeek! That`s kind of like a rape victim being blamed for wearing a short skirt. Making Wyatt appear even more in need of psychiatric assistance, he then is upset with Natalie for doubting him. "I couldn`t have been any clearer than I was with you that night." "I could NEVER touch you without a commitment." "You can`t seriously think that I`d just love you and leave you," he said incredulously. "Never mind that he`d actually thought about it, but it was more for his own self preservation." What??? The mind boggles!

Both Natalie and Wyatt lose brownie points with the reader for being fixated on how she should wear her hair and talking dirty during the major family crisis.

Without giving anything away, even at the end of the story, Wyatt leaves Natalie feeling insecure and unloved. This guy would not be parking his boots under my bed!

It works for me

After oil pulling with coconut oil first thing in the morning for 6 weeks(but I also brush and floss) my dental hygienist was flabbergasted at how my mouth and teeth had improved. No plaque and my teeth color did not deteriorate since my last visit. My teeth coloring was one major problem I have always had-extra work to whiten but made the dentist richer. Since beginning oil pulling, I only have to go every 6 months instead of 4 months. In the future I will probably go yearly instead now that my mouth is great. Since I will not have dental insurance for long, this little book has become a marvelous money saver too. I have always enjoyed history and Dr. Fife's clear writing of the connection between oral hygiene and the onset of many illnesses is illuminating, and just plain fun!
As an extra aside, I bit my tongue (ouch!!) which needed 2 stitches (ouch ouch!!). I Oil Pulled several times a day which soothed the injury. I do not know if my injured tongue healed more quickly with oil pulling but it is good as new.
I also oil pull with coconut oil for a few minutes only after having a good cigar. No matter how 'good' my cigars are, my mouth has a little tingle afterwards. The oil pull soothes my mouth.
UPDATE: 4/19/2011. I just came back from my dental exam. It turns out my gums have 'grown' back around 2 of my teeth. Once a year, my gums get measured for any gum receding(recession?). Most of my mouth has a 2 or 3 rating which is good. Apparently there were 2 spots though that had a 4 rating from last year. These spots all improved to a 3!!. I asked how that is possible and was informed that keeping the mouth extra clean along with flossing created the environment for my gums to thrive. To me, these numbers are evidence that oil pulling does the trick. By the by, I continue to not have any plaque. Again, I attribute oil pulling as the major factor. I used to brush and floss x2/day but still had moderate plaque. Believe it!!!
Jan 6, 012: It has been 8 1/2 months since my last general exam. My hygienist asked how I liked my electric toothbrush. I told her I only use a manual. She looked at me surprised. She said my teeth and gums look like I use the electric because they are so clean. She also noticed that teeth were not stained since I did not smoke many cigars this year which was true due to horrible hot summer. She cleaned and polished them and after the dentist looked I went on my way. Oil pulling continues to improve my mouth!!!
Feb 4, 2014: Hello there!... I''m back with an update. I have returned to my dentist after one full year due to sudden tooth pain. I continue to oil pull every morning for 20 minutes and brush and floss x2/day. A full exam was done but exam was quick. No plaque and gums are good. Dentist has this new spray that cleans teeth instead of usual cleaning method. Hygienist says I brush very good including in the back. This I attribute to my oil pulling in the back of the mouth. very easy. there has been some pain in the back . X-rays taken. No infection of nerve damage so dentist recd I return in 6 months as a preventative...I agreed. best to spend a few bucks to be safe but will concentrate oil pulling in the painful region in case germs are hiding. Take care everyone.
Sept 3, 2014. Time flies!. No plaque except way in the back of my mouth where it is hard to brush but not as bad as before. no plaque elsewhere. painful tooth continues but using special toothpaste. Just have to live w it. My dentist has the same problem. Gums still growing in some new areas. Take care.
Jan 4, 2016. Happy New Year. Was talking with a friend and she just happened to thank me for introducing her to Oil Pulling w coconut oil from about 2 years ago. She said her plaque has been reduced, her teeth are whiter and her teeth "deep pockets" have disappeared. Her dentist is amazed. Not too shabby, huh folks?

This book has changed my life

I read this book and began oil-pulling about 2 months ago. Since then I have reversed documented nerve damaged and avoided my 5th back surgery. My arthritis in my knees is much better. I have lost weight and my cellulite is going away. My teeth are whiter, my gum tighter. I feel more energetic, happier and optimistic than I have in years allowing me to get off some prescription meds. This is a program that is completely "no harm - no foul"! Over the years I have spent thousands of dollars chasing health and relief of 10 years of chronic pain. This program costs maybe 25� a day and a minimum of 20 minutes. I am blown away. I have shared this book with my dentist, doctors, surgeon, friends and family. Everyone sees some change - some faster some slower. I have noticed the more you pull the more changes you see. This book is a must for those who seek health!!!!

Improving your health is not supposed to be this easy

Here is a safe and very easy way to vastly improve your health without special pills or diets. All it requires is swishing a spoonful of vegetable oil around your mouth for at least 15 minutes at a time.

Many scientific studies have chronicled a link between chronic illness and the health of our mouths (the book references over 150 such studies). Think about it; our mouths are constantly warm and moist, like a tropical rain forest, which is a great breeding ground for germs. They are also open to the outside, so it is very easy for bacteria to enter our mouths and take up residence. From there, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel to any part of the body. There it can cause anything from arthritis to constipation to eczema to hypertension to sinusitis (all of which have been reported as responding to oil pulling).

What do you do? Take a tablespoon of nearly any vegetable oil (the author recommends coconut oil) and swish it around your mouth for several minutes, then spit it out. That's all. Teeth are very porous, full of tiny tubules where the bacteria can hide. Brushing, flossing or mouthwash will not clean out those tubules; oil pulling will. This is not a cure for whatever ails you. Oil pulling simply removes the infection from your mouth so that your body's natural healing properties can do their job.

This is totally safe for children and pregnant women, as the only ingredient is vegetable oil. It can also be done several times a day, if necessary. If you experience side effects, like coughing up mucus, or the sudden onset of what feels like the flu, don't worry about it; it's your body cleaning itself out. Also, don't worry if you don't see any immediate improvement in your health; some people simply heal faster than others. Also, after you are done swishing, do not swallow; spit it out. You don't want to remove the bacteria from your mouth, just to deposit it in your stomach.

Improving your health is not supposed to be this easy. This book is very easy to read for anyone, and is very highly recommended.

First hand experience

This is a book written from a patient point of view about the gastric sleeve surgery. The book starts with the history of the surgery, who qualifies for it, and then proceed to details about the cost, dietary restrictions, sagging skin and potential complications. After the general discussion the author describes the surgery itself, the diet and general feeling after the surgery. The does not stop with the surgery, the author describes what happens after the surgery. This is not a literary book that is written by a professional, however the information is valuable and can only be shared by someone who has gone through the experience himself.

Huge information & guides about Bariatric surgery. Worth reading!

I heard about this book and Bariatric surgery a few weeks ago from my uncle and my curiosity to know more grew up from there. I grabbed this book from the wake of my curiosity and after reading it entirely, I was pleased enough. Here the author described a real patient’s personal success story. Throughout this book, I have also come to know about background & history of this treatment's procedure. This book taught me how to prepare myself for this type of surgery. Here I got lots of info about insurance & cost considerations. Not only the author has described all those things but also described all the essential procedures of post-surgery like: diet plan, recovery follow up, techniques, tips and much more. Overall, this was a helpful read and it also enlarged my knowledge.

This book was so helpful for my uncle. He was under severe pressure from his medical advisor that he beeded to make a lifestyle change. But with so many options, how do you know what to trust? Luckily, the information here was easy to understand and super informative. Look forward to reading other books in the series.

Great Resource

Wow! I used this book with a 3rd grade struggling reader and she did a complete 180 in just a few months. Her understanding of phonics went through the roof. We did two-three pages together each week and she did one exercise a day on her own. I was incredibly pleased with the amount of practice for each skill.

Fritz Cropp, Ph.D. directs the International Programs office at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, where he also is an assistant professor of advertising. Cynthia Frisby, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of advertising at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism. Dr. Frisby teaches courses in advertising, media planning and media sales. Dean Mills, Ph.D. has been professor and dean at the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia for 13 years.
