About the Author
Michael E. McCormick is currently a Corbin A. McNeill Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the US Naval Academy. He is a Fellow of the Marine Technology Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1976, he became the co-editor of the journal Ocean Engineering and remained so for thirty years. Prior to that, he was the editor of the Marine Technology Society Journal. Professor McCormick was the first recipient of the US Naval Academy Alumni Award for Research Excellence and was also awarded the US Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the US Navy Superior Civilian Service Award. He is the author of Ocean Engineering Wave Mechanics and Ocean Wave Energy Conversion. Professor McCormick received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a Sc.D. in engineering science from Trinity College, Dublin.

Reasonable, but old

This is a reasonable read with a lot of good information. There are many equations available to help the engineer understand the physics of what is happening. Non-engineers may want to find a different book, or skip over any sections with equations. Unfortunately, there are numerous errors in the equations. One great thing is that there are a lot or "worked examples" in this book so it is possible to test your understanding of the equations (and prove that the book has errors).

Perhaps the bigger problem with the book is that it is so old (1981). Wave power has progress a lot since then. The book is well written and carefully considered. It is unfortunate that no one has had a chance to update the book. On the other hand, the physics of wave power does not change, so that section of the book is fine.

If the author writes a Wave Power 2010, I would definitely pick that up.

Excellent technical reference with basic technology review.

I borrowed this from the local varsity library and appreciated it's excellent readable style, dual unit use and relevant examples so much as to make this a must buy and I have done just that. Sensible comparison of various wave energy conversion technologies show how to assess WEC methods. As a prelude to McCormick's later, more advanced books, this is certainly one that should involve the reader in this fascinating technology.

I bought this book for a class (required text), but I think I only opened the book a few times. It seemed a little dated. I traded it back to amazon after the class was over. I just wasn't very impressed and I didn't find it useful. My class was Ocean Energy Conversion and wave energy conversion was about half the class.

Very factual and well written. It will offend the PC crowd but book is full of truth. Frank Turek tackled a controversial topic with grace and he still paid for it personally. Good to equip our children is this increasing secular culture

About the Author
Bruce S. Jansson (MA, University of Chicago and Harvard University; PhD, University of Chicago) is the Driscoll/Clevenger Professor of Social Policy in the Department of Social Work at the University of Southern California (USC). He joined the USC faculty in 1973 after working in Pennsylvania and Michigan as a community organizer and planner for tenant rights. His scholarly interests focus on advancing mezzo, micro, and macro policy advocacy in social work, as well as examining the history and practice of social welfare policy. He invented the term "policy practice," which has become a required content area by the Council on Social Work Education. He recently developed the first multi-level policy advocacy framework that discusses policy advocacy at micro, mezzo, and macro levels. He also has served as the Moses Distinguished Research Professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Dr. Jansson has written two books for Cengage: BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE POLICY ADVOCATE, now in its 8th edition, and THE RELUCTANT WELFARE STATE (8th Edition). Additional books include THE SIXTEEN TRILLION DOLLAR MISTAKE: HOW THE U.S. BUNGLED ITS NATIONAL PRIORITIES FROM THE NEW DEAL TO THE PRESENT (2001), IMPROVING HEALTHCARE THROUGH ADVOCACY, and SOCIAL WELFARE SECTORS AND ADVOCACY. He has authored four research articles that develop measurement scales to measure the extent health professionals engage in patient and policy advocacy, as well as predictors of their levels of engagement, and is currently working on a book on inequality.

About the Author
Journalist Juan Gonzalez was a staff columnist at the New York Daily News from 1987 to 2016. He is cohost of the award-winning daily radio and television news program Democracy Now! and a two-time recipient of the George Polk Award for commentary.

A two-time Audie Award winner, veteran actor Robert Fass is equally at home in a wide variety of styles, genres, characters, and dialects. He has earned multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards, including for his narration of Francisco Goldman's novel Say Her Name.

The real story of the us latino heritage, then and right now.

This book is a MUST read for any American (North American) trying to understand the latin-american people and how they are a huge contribution to our country's history yesterday and today. The author starts comparing how the post-Columbus Spanish empire and the early settlements of the english colonies would forever be different, and how it still shapes our North American culture today. Anyone who is unfamiliar with the latino story or who thinks that what goes on in Iraq, Israel, and Afghanistan is more important then what goes on south of the border needs to read this book.

The book is well written, easy to read, and throughly researched. It is not biassed or racist. It is simply an eye opening introduction to a continuously growing latino culture that will continue to be a growing part of this country (USA) for decades to come.

Gratitude to Gonzalez for Having Written This Book

Harvest of Empire is impressive in both breadth and depth (with breadth generally taking priority), quite readable (often engaging and lively, only sometimes bogging down in historical details at the expense of the larger narrative), and immensely informative.

Gonzales shows how Latin America and the US have been deeply connected for centuries, how Latinas/os have a long and integral history of participating in and contributing to US culture, and how Latino/a immigration to the US can be directly connected to US military and economic involvement/intervention in Latin America. In all of this, he documents and critiques the prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination Latinas/os have faced within the US. In the short epilogue, he also lays out a concrete vision for a just, multicultural future for the country.

I finished this book with a strong sense of gratitude to Gonzalez for having written it.

Bought it for my son for a college course at CUNY Hunter. He states that, Gonzalez successfully utilizes all of his past experiences as a Young Lord, as well as his experiences as a journalist who focuses on the Latino conditions in the United States. Really great read and very informative.
