Longing for God

In Sufism, The Transformation of the Heart, Vaughan-Lee brilliantly describes a spiritual tradition that cannot be nailed down in words--a path of inner union between lover and Beloved, "a bridge from the world of forms to the formless." In this book he introduces the major teachers of different branches of Sufism, while distilling the essence of the path taught by all of the masters: the cry of the soul to God.

For those who have tasted this desire for God, Vaughan-Lee's passages will blow on the fire of their longing. For those new to Sufism, this book is an excellent introduction to a spiritual path that leads to the heart's transformation. I love how simply and lovingly Vaughan-Lee points our attention away from ego-identification with this transformation, reminding us that we are here for the Divine to reveal the Divine to Itself. (It is so easy to get caught in the ego's games of claiming spiritualness for itself.)

Vaughan-Lee's unique contribution to Sufi literature is his application of Jungian psychology to help Westerners understand this process of transformation. I found the chapter "Polishing the Heart" particularly helpful, where he describes a woman's relationship to her animus much more clearly and more intimately than Jungian texts covering the same subject. Vaughan-Lee also gives attention to the suffering of the feminine in Western culture and how we have collectively repressed feminine qualities, inner experiences, and a mystical connection with God. This book is very accessible and a valuable resource.

"Heart's Desiring-- Soul's Journeying"

What is written in The Transformation of the Heart speaks to the basics of the spiritual path, the fundamental questions a seeker has when she yearns to embark on this strange journey of the heart. "At the core of all Sufi practices is the element of love and devotion," the author says in the introduction, and everything that follows is invitation and methodology to go deeper and deeper into one's heart.
I particularly appreciated the chapter in which Dr. Vaughan-Lee discusses the relationship with the teacher. It's so different to the way we've been culturally conditioned to experience relationship in the West, as some form of association between person and person, ego and ego. The author shows the real relationship with the teacher, that the teacher is an empty space through which the love and grace of the path flow.

Not Doing Justice to Llewellyn or Sufism

I bought this book after watching an interview of the author on Oprah since I had wanted to learn more about Sufism and Rumi for a long time. Although during the interview Llewellyn was very impressive, this book is not. I was reluctant to write an unfavorable review, so I went ahead and read the book the second time, did a lot of research on the internet and watched Llewellyn's almost an hour long video called "We Are All One: Full Interview with Llewellyn Vaugh-Lee" and his interview with Oprah on the internet before writing the review.

According to the book's definition, "Sufi is a name given to a band of mystics who are lovers of God". The goal in Sufism or a Sufi is to become one with God by mediating and chanting (dhikr). Some of the concepts are similar to other spiritual teachings such as "Divinity of humans" (Holy Spirit or God living in every human like Unity teachings), "The real reason of unhappiness or feelings of unfulfillment is the result of separation from God" ("A Course in Miracles") ," Living in the world but not of it" (Bible) and "Living in the presence of God every moment" (Marianne Williamson's writings)

After finishing it, I was terribly disappointed by the book which is terribly dry, abstract and repetitious. ( "The mind and the ego can never grasp an experience of total unity in which there is no distinction between observer and observed, but the heart's experience of His unity is reflected into our ordinary consciousness." )I learned more about Sufism from a three minute video of Jonathan Brown from Georgetown University, a video clip of a documentary about Sufism by PBS on the internet and Rumi's official website maintained by his descendants(Mevlana Rumi), than reading this book.(Mevlana Rumi's website also has a list of recommended books in English. If you click on each book's web link, it takes to Amazon.com, where you can buy the books.)

However, my major disappointment about this book was the dedication of one third of the book, fifty pages, to Carl Jung and his dream work while briefly mentioning Rumi, two pages, the first person comes to mind in many circles talking about Sufism. (Since I did a lot of reading about Jung years ago, I did not buy this book to learn about Jung but Sufism) Not to mention, there was no coverage of Omar Khayyam or Al-Ghazali "whose influences extended beyond Muslim lands and Western philosophers and theologians" according to my internet research.

In this age of separation, alienation and strife, we need more enlightened spiritual teachers like Llewelly and his message of universal love and unity. ("God is all there is, everything is God's expression of Himself and God is love."/ "Whatsoever you turn, there is the face of God") One can't help but admire his command of the English language when he talks, brilliance, level of spiritual enlightenment, and dedication of spreading the message of universal love (Sufism) to masses. I wish he would write the way he talks because if readers, who don't know much about the subject matter unlike him, don't understand the book, the message is not going to reach the target audience. (I highly recommend watching his an hour long video called "We Are All One" on the internet to really appreciate him.)

Great book and handy for daily reading!

Depression is a terrible thing to live with, especially if it the most dominant emotion you are feeling every day. It can lead to illness, poor life choices, and so many other negative thing that can prevent you from experiencing a joyful life. This book has so many powerful tips to beat this life-draining feeling and overcome just about anything. It is quite easy to read and not just once, but as often as you feel the need to pick yourself back up. I give it five stars and completely recommend this book if you want to overcome depression at any level!

The tips shared in this book are applicable not only for those suffering from depression, but for anyone that seeks emotional, mental, & physical well-being. This book offers a lot of great tips that someone can implement right away, but there are suggestions made that will require many to turn to other sources to learn strategies on how to implement the tip given. This book is a good starting point for those wanting a quick, easy to read overview on how to live life with a positive outlook.

The fight doesn't go well for either side, but The Black Hood is unmasked in the conflict and Hettinger's real identity is revealed. Wounded and with the police hot on his trail, Hettinger is forced to leave the scene and his assailants are captured. He knows he only has a limited amount of time to find The Connection and get his revenge before he's hunted down and killed by The Connection himself. His circumstances force Hettinger to take drastic actions and seek help from those he trusts the most. The story keeps getting better and I look forward to the next chapter of The Bullet's Kiss. The end of the comic includes an essay about the problem of graft and corruption in Philadelphia.

The author emphasizes the role of important leaders and the rapid growth of the multiethnic Russian Empire. Boterbloem explores continuity and change from the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation, arguing that a general absence of a rule of law or a frequent ignoring of existing laws by leaders and commoners alike was a similar phenomenon in all three states. The work is quite appropriate for undergraduate courses, especially those seeking to cover Russian and Soviet history in one semester. Ruwan Rajapakse is presently a project manager for STV Incorporated, one of the most prominent design firms in New York City. He has extensive experience in design and construction of piles and other geotechnical engineering work. He is a licensed professional engineer (PE) in New York and New Jersey and a certified construction manager (CCM). He is currently an adjunct professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology conducting the graduate level geotechnical engineering course. He is the author of four books including Geotechnical Engineering Calculations and Rule of Thumb and Pile Design and Construction Rules of Thumb by Butterworth-Heinemann.

Risky but worth it!

After reading through every story, glued to the page the whole time, I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. This author really shows her stuff in these stories. You can tell she enjoys writing it as much as we enjoy reading it, which is something I always love to find in my erotica authors.
I've picked up some other Nightside stories. A lot of them are about mind control and such. These don't have that. They do have some light bdsm elements which I think add nice flavor. There's also unprotected relations and so forth. It's all very hot and I think well worth the time of anybody looking for a good bundle or two. I think altogether these stories are as long as a novel, so it'll last you a while (unless you read as fast as me lol)

Great bundle!

I read all three of these in a rush. I think I'll go back to them later on tonight or the next day, but they were all incredibly steamy and erotic. My favorite may have been the first one, but I really liked Annette from the last story with the road trip. The seduced story didn't do as much for me, although I could see how others would love it. I loved the other two so that's still a great bargain for the price. I recommend this author and this series!

Each of these stories, while they have their own plot, share the common theme of two women realizing they're better off serving one man at each other's sides. I find that intense and hot, and a lot of fun to read. If you like that sort of thing, then you'll like this. If you like hot sex scenes or great descriptions, that's here too. Pick it up.

Best Angular book I have read to date

I have read Pro AngularJS (Expert's Voice in Web Development) by Freeman and Mastering Web Application Development with AngularJS and this book is better than both. It follows google's recommended scaffolding, testing and structure. So if you want to learn Angular in a way that will translate well to others, then consider getting this book.

This book is great if you have a base understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. There are no chapters in this book on them specifically, which makes sense to me but for some reason the added chapters seem to be common in books like this. I doubt you would need any prior knowledge of AngularJS, though I had some when I read it.

The first chapter covers the obligatory project and it is a stock tracking app. Which for me was a nice change from the standard cart building project.

After that there rest of the book is just a good explanation of Angular, broken down logically into sections that relate to each other (read the chapter list for the breakdown).

The Authors are big on custom directives and filters, which is nice. I learned some new ways to work with Angular that work better than they ways I was using. He is also big on the word 'paradigm' for some reason. I swear it comes up at least 5 times a chapter.

There are a lot of gems in there such as when to choose a filter over a service or a directive over a factory etc. I had been using stuff based on the other 2 books I read that worked, but was not ideal and it felt fragile or clumsy at times. I now have a few more options that will work better depending on the need.

I have also read a lot of blogs on routes and SEO for SPA's and this book again provided me with the best explanations that I have had so far. There is also some solid intro stuff on yeoman, grunt and gulp.

If you want to learn Angular I recommend this book. I was going to wait for the one published by Manning but I am glad I got this now rather than wait.

Covers the broad AngularJS/Javascript ecosystem

This book covers the core AngularJS framework (v1.2), as well as the broad AngularJS/Javascript ecosystem, and even some server side Node.js packages (in the context of development with Angular), including

- package management (npm, bower);
- build and scaffolding (grunt, gulp, yeoman);
- js file/module loader (RequireJS, Browserify);
- testing (Mocha, Karma, protractor);
- search engine optimization (Prerender);
- UI libraries (AngularStrap, ui-bootstrap);
- mobile framework (Ionic);
- server communication (Loopback, SocketIO, Firebase);
- isomorphic js validation (Mongoose schema)

The book is very well structured and is suitable for first time read or being used as a reference. The example SPA in Chapter 1 (the largest example in the book), although built step by step, can be challenging for readers who are new to front end js development.

Even though the book uses Angular 1.2 for all the example code, the content of the book should be applicable to Angular 1.3/1.4.

What a Disappointment!

OK, I purchased this book based on other reviews. The impression I got was it was a good book for Angular beginners. That it concentrated on Angular and learning it,. Boy was I wrong. I want to learn Angular not:
Yeoman
Gulp
Bower
Grunt etc, etc, etc. The book relies on these tools and the versions are old. I waited a week and couldn't wait to began going through the book intending to do it chapter by chapter and follow along the way the authors intended. That didn't work out so well. In the first chapter they have you installing these other dependencies and the fun begins here. There are errors in installing some of these tools that require visits to StackOverflow to find out the workarounds. After investing the time to get, in this case Bowen installed and get Grunt server to run you embark on a journey to get services and then install more stuff.
Boom, that's when I gave up.
By the way I've been in software development for 20+ years and ain't no noob when it comes to learning new tools and technologies.

Bottom line, if you are looking for a primer on Angular then this book isn't for you. I wanted a path to learn Angular and all this other stuff just gets in the way. If it all worked like it most likely did when they wrote the book this story might have had a different ending.

Back to looking for a better book.
