Lazy afternoon read

About the Author
Gilbert Strang is a Professor of Mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, of the University of Oxford, UK. His current research interests include linear algebra, wavelets and filter banks, applied mathematics, and engineering mathematics. He is the author or co-author of six textbooks and has published a monograph with George Fix titled “An Analysis of the Finite Element Method.” Professor Strang served as SIAM’s president from 1999-2000, chaired the U.S. National Committee on Mathematics from 2003–2004, and won the Neumann Medal of the US Association of Computational Mechanics in 2005. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Indispensable resource for any data scientist

My bookshelves are lined with materials that support my work in data science and machine learning. I have a large section of mathematics books including several on the subject of linear algebra. For many years my “go to” text on linear algebra was an old 2nd edition of MIT Professor Gilbert Strang’s seminal book on the subject that I picked up at a swap meet. To my surprise, the good professor recently sent me a copy of his latest and greatest 5th edition of “Introduction to Linear Algebra” (Wellesley-Cambridge Press).

I found the new edition to be even better than previous editions. For one it is now 574 pages versus my old copy’s 374. I also found the book to be impressively re-tooled for educational purposes. The chapters contain useful “Review of the Key Ideas” sections, worked examples, and well thought out problem sets (with special “Challenge Problems” for those who want to dive deeper). Gilbert Strang’s textbooks have changed the entire approach to learning linear algebra – away from abstract vector spaces to specific examples of the four fundamental subspaces: the column space and nullspace of A and A’.

The chapters directly apply to the needs of data scientists wishing to establish a firm foundation for how machine learning happens behind the scenes. All chapters are superbly crafted, but my favorites are: Chapter 7 because SVD plays an important role in Principal Component Analysis for dimensionality reduction as well as PCA regression; Chapter 10 as it enhances the math subject matter with practical applications; Chapter 11 which is a nice adjunct to the pure math content and reminds me of portions of the old “Numerical Methods” (Prentice-Hall) text by G. Dahlquist et al that I used in my early days of data science; and Chapter 12 which is perfect for data scientists who want to see the relationship with statistics and probability.

Strang’s new edition is a great launching point for newbies as well as practicing data scientists to gain a foothold in the theory behind the technology. If you feel a bit insecure with your mathematical prowess when reading the statistical leaning bible “Elements of Statistical Learning” by Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman (a group of high-profile Stanford researchers), then Strang’s book is the best way to lay a firm foundation.

Gilbert Strang is a Professor of Mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, of the University of Oxford. His current research interests include linear algebra, wavelets and filter banks, applied mathematics, and engineering mathematics. He is the author or co-author of eight textbooks. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

The book also comes with an excellent web resource which includes downloadable sections (PDFs) of many chapters, a complete chapter-by-chapter solutions manual for the problem sets, and practice exam questions. The book is used as the textbook for MIT’s undergrad linear algebra course 18.06. It is also the book used in MIT’s Open Courseware class on the subject, complete with video lectures. This means you can take a full-fledged MIT course to help you become well-versed with this important subject matter. I highly recommend this book for any up-and-coming data scientist.

I do have a big complaint with this new book! It’s going to sap a lot of time from my busy schedule because with such a great learning resource in my hands, I know myself, I’m going to spend time “re-learning” the subject for the nth time, doing the problem sets, and thinking hard about how important math is to a firm understanding of machine learning. I don’t have time for this!

Deserves the money spent

I never thought that linear algebra is that useful in real life. I was enrolled in a master program and my first course was computer vision. There were massive amount of math and mostly were linear algebra. I felt like I lacked all enough comfort with linear algebra and thought that I could have understood many topics much better if I got a good book. Hell, this book is awesome. It has all what I need specially SVD and PCA. I don't care much about solving problems as to understand the meaning of linear algebra and its logic. I must admit that prior reading this book I had good grasp of what a matrix is and how we can formulate our data as a matrix, which opened the world of applications I can apply all the techniques of linear algebra on. Dr.Gilbert is a man who knows how to deliver high quality information to you, but you as a reader must also have the role of analyzing what you read and try to find an application of interest in your head where you can practice what you read. I looked at 10s of books before deciding to buy this one, and the only book which I felt comfortable with was this one. The only problem is that this book is expensive, but in my opinion, this books deserves every dollar and is a must in any machine lerning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, game programer or any field engineer library

Amazing book. I watched Professor Strang's Linear Algebra lectures on Youtube before buying this book. I delayed in buying this book because I thought that all the information on linear algebra can be found on the internet for free. Why do I have to buy a $90 book? But I had a hard time understanding linear algebra even after taking a course in college, watching youtube videos, and reading explanations online. So, I gave in and bought this book. Now, I realize what an amazing investment this has been. Worth every penny. In fact, it might be too cheap that this book is only worth $90. I wish I had bought this book many years ago. Professor Strang is a genius in his understanding of math. But more important is that he is a genius in explaining difficult concepts and making it easy to understand. If you're trying to learn and/or understand linear algebra, save yourself a lot of trouble by buying this book.

I’m having a great time folding with my son and his friends

My son and I have always been lovers of origami so I am always looking for new books and special origami paper so he can enjoy the full experience when he sits down to fold his different projects. He has been getting a little bored with the normal basic folds and creations he has been enjoying for so long, so as he gets older he’s been wanting to do more challenging things since he does Origami often, and wanting to learn more advanced folds and be able to complete more advanced projects. So I got him this book, since we both loved the first book from this seller. When we got it he sat down with me and didn’t want to stop all night until he got this one fold right. Talk about keeping a child occupied! This book was awesome for me and awesome for him, and he has been at it every day this week. The book shows how to do each fold and with instructions for easy understanding. I think this book is perfect for those at any age with a little experience in origami and needing a bit more of a challenge when creating!

Challenging and Fun!

This project is a bit challenging, but this book explains each step in full detail in addition to great diagrams that help guide you as you are folding. My nephew had a lot of fun making this train with me, and he was so proud of himself when he finished it. If you are into Origami, you need to add this train to your collection. It is so adorable and the book does an amazing job of explaining how to do all of the different folds required to make it. I highly recommend this book. Thumbs Up!

Directions could be more clear...

Obviously, you need to be an advanced folder to take this on. Even still, there are loads of pics that show the paper after it's been folded and unfolded. I'm not a great fan of trying to work out what happened. Still, it's a really cool concept!

Clint Hill

Clint Hill is the�New York Times�bestselling author of�Mrs. Kennedy and Me and�Five Days in November. A former Secret Service agent who was in the presidential motorcade during the John F. Kennedy assassination, Hill remained assigned to Mrs. Kennedy until after the 1964 election. He then was assigned to President Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House and later to Richard Nixon, eventually becoming the Assistant Director of the Secret Service for all protection. He retired in 1975.

One of the best books on presidential protection

I just finished reading Agent Clint Hill's book, Mrs. Kennedy and Me. As an ex-secret service agent and the first African American Agent to serve on the White House Detail under President Kennedy, I want to congratulate Agent Hill on a very well written and interesting memoir. I served on the detail with Agent Hill in 1961. When the terrible incident happened in Dallas on November 22, 1963 and the reports circulated that one agent had responded by trying to shield the occupants riding in the presidential limousine, I knew immediately that that agent was Clint Hill. The reader should know that, in my opinion, this book is the memoir of one of the most diligent, responsible, trustworthy, dutiful agents ever to serve on the White House Detail. This book is a must read for anyone endeavoring to obtain an insightful agent's view and understanding of the tragic occurrences of November 22, 1963.

Beguiled - A Secret Service Agent's Love Story

To my surprise this book is a love story. Not a salacious inappropriate smut filled account, but rather one with stories of growth, fun times, laughter, dedication, respect! A story of sorrow and sadness that is uplifting because of caring and friendship. This book is a warm modern portrait the Mr. and Mrs. John F. Kennedy and their children from someone who was close to them with no axe to grind. Even the sad events are presented with compassion. There's a lot of love in this book.

Secret Service Agent Clint Hill begins his association in late 1960 with the Kennedy administration in a fearful place. Fearful that after a couple of years of what he believed was success on President Eisenhower's detail, he's suddenly removed from the "main action" of protecting the president. Is this a demotion he bemoans? Like any macho Secret Service dude seeking to advance, Mr. Hill naturally dreads moving to the First Ladies detail with its potential daily doses of "fashion shows and the ballet." Yet, both loving his job and having a young family to support, Mr. Hill accepts his fate and reports to 3307 N Street, Georgetown, to meet (be approved by??!!) the young First Lady-elect (she's already rejected one perspective agent!!).

Disappoint quickly turns to beguilement, as Clint Hill is thoroughly charmed and enchanted by this beautiful, fun, witty, intelligent, adventurous, sporty, irreverent and yeah, a bit of a spoiled rich girl (who knows how to get her way). Heck, he even learns to not mind the occasional fashion show (so long as it features the First Lady!), ballet in New York and even personally shopping for ladies apparel in Ravello, Itally!!!! Who woulda thunk it.

No, I've not overdone it on the adjectives and yeah, this isn't your typical "Kennedy" bio. Mr. Hill doesn't criticize or attack, but showers his subject with affection. He and all the agents, because of the nature of their jobs, seemingly abandon their own lives and families in their service to the first family and all who they protect. One can see how the close private contact and the enormous amount of time spent away from the agent's loved ones can lead to feelings that are deeper and more personal towards the subject of their protection.

Mr. Hill (and she's "Mrs. Kennedy - she adheres to proper address at all times) not only loves the First Lady, but he also very much cares for her husband and their children too. He just plain loves the Kennedy first family period - and says that despite what's been written, they were a loving and playful family. He even is amused by the extended Kennedy clan and their friends!!

Mr. Hill doesn't portend to sell more books by detailing alleged unsavory dalliances and missteps. You will find no recollections or opinions about the first couple's sex life (apart from a remembrance about some suggestive art that the First Lady picks up in India...humorous not amorous). While Mr. Hill does mention a certain controversial birthday featuring a drunken female movie star and her singing, and he does hint at a certain rat pack crooners' rather inappropriate interest in Mrs. Kennedy's personal activities (this was new to me - and I've read at least 50 bios on the K's), Mr. Hill doesn't go further than what he truly knows to be true - which is that Mrs. Kennedy never shared her feelings about either.

I felt his writing in this way showed not only respect for his subjects, but a certain truth missing in most other biographies that serve rumor as fact, and seem to relish ripping their subjects apart. Well, there's no ripping here.

If one reads between the lines, here is a portrait of a woman who undoubtedly loves her place in life with her powerful, public servant, handsome husband (whatever his warts), and yet thrives on the one thing that is the antithesis of his job (and perhaps his entire being) - privacy. A lady who is tough and yet wears her vulnerabilities in "her espresso-colored eyes." A lady who claims to dislike the "fish bowl" existence inherent in the White House, yet secretly enjoys reading the gossip magazines featuring herself.

Topics that Mr. Hill offers an accounting:

Why Mrs. Kennedy spent so much time away from the White House (Mr. Hill says she spent about eight percent of her time AWAY from the White House during one time period in 1961).

Mrs. Kennedy's various vacations and partying amongst the creme de la creme of the European social set without her husband (according to Mr. Hill, usually with her SISTER - and nothing out of line - except for the time she jumps in the sports car of a very, very young Greek Count who engages Mr. Hill and his fellow agents on a high speed chase...but that was about fun - not illicit romance).

Onassis! I didn't know that President Kennedy felt so strongly about Mrs. Kennedy having nothing to do with Onassis as early as her visit to Greece in 1961!!! Mr. Hill felt very uneasy about the Greek tycoon.

Despite the fun and adventures, in the end, this is a story about great pain, loss and sorrow. Also, about one man's journey to learning to forgive himself. This book is a great success for no other reason than its finally allowed Mr. Hill peace of mind.

A step back in time

I was thirteen the year that President Kennedy died. I sobbed as I walked home from school that day. I sobbed as I read this book and there were moments that I felt like I was reliving all of this with Agent Hill. The killing, the motorcade, the funeral ,the warren commission, all of it.

The compassion these men feel for the "First Family" is obvious, the sacrifices they make are phenomenal. Thank you would never be enough to repay them for their service to our country .

This book is indescribable and a must read. There are no words to describe the emotions I felt reading it nor the insight to the personal life of Mrs. Kennedy.

Thank you Agent Hill for sharing your heartfelt memories.

A Classic in its Own Right

After reading this book, not only do I have a greater respect for our Founding Fathers, but I also understand why Ms. Bowen used the word "Miracle" in her title. It's remarkable to think that our Constitution, which has proven durable over the past two centuries in spite of its flaws, arose out of those intense debates in Philadelphia's sweltering summer.
This book is particularly valuable for its perspective. Learning about the delegates' personalities and backgrounds was fascinating, and seeing the Convention in the context of the social and political conditions of early America was especially insightful. I also enjoyed seeing the early colonies through the eyes of foreign visitors.
If you're interested in the history of the U.S. Constitution, this book is a must (my condolences to the disgruntled high school students of previous reviews).

A Classic and Important Book

This is the story of the formation of our constitutional govenrment.
Catherine Drinker Bowen's book is a classic that tells how America's founding fathers debated, compromised and struggled to create a permanent system of rebublican government in a world ruled by monarchs and absolutists.
The debates are here, as well as the personalities. The story of how various elements of our governing structure were arrived at is fascinating as well as illuminating to any serious student of the American system. Important debates regarding the nature of the presidency, small state versus large state interests (how we got our Senate), the desirability of direct democracy versus state interests (part of how we got the Electoral College), the finessing of the slave issue -- its all here.
I read this book and was filled with a profound sense of pride and amazement at the story of how the "gentlemen of Philadelphia" were able to navigate such complex issues and arrive at the masterpiece that is our Constitution.
In Bowen's hands, this moving and patriotic story is well told and thoroughly explored. I imagine many of you reading this review have this book on a political science syllabus, but it should be read by any with an interest in our Constitution or our government's history.

Miracle at Philadelphia....most illuminating.

I purchased this book over ten years ago and for various reasons, I did not get to read it until last summer. A pleasant surprise! The book places the Constitutional Convention within the context of the times, political and social climate and the beliefs and personalities of those responsible for its creation. Clean Eating Has Helped Me Balance My Sugar Levels

I have hypoglycemia and I'm always looking for a way to eat better to keep my roller coaster sugar levels at bay. I wasn't sure what "Clean Eating" was - until I read Clean Eating Made Simple. After several weeks using the ideas outlined in this book, I can honestly say I feel better, haven't had nearly as many hypoglycemic episodes and have even lost weight! My favorite advice is to focus on smaller meals, eat more fruits and vegetables (I always felt like the natural sugars in fruits were bad for me! Turns out, they are only bad when you are also eating cake and ice cream!) and never skip a meal. Sometimes it's easier to skip a meal rather than eat poorly when I can't find something healthy. Now I understand the importance of making SURE I have something healthy to eat with me so I don't fall back on skipping or eating crap. Lastly, perhaps the best note in the book is the fact that clean eating isn't an "all or nothing" deal. Do my best...plan ahead... and don't punish myself for being imperfect. Attitude is an important part of healthy eating.

Poor quality print

I did like the recipes in this book but I have to say that I actually had to get a magnifying glass to read them!!! The print is so small and when the recipe list the ingredients the print is not only small, it is light so it makes it even harder to read. I have no idea what they were thinking when they printed this book but i was poorly done.

A Little Too Simple

While the opening chapters literally beat you over the head with repeated definitions of “clean eating,” the bulk of this book consists of complicated recipes that contradict the basics of this current diet trend. Many recipes are presented that admittedly are not “100%” clean, so if you are looking for a strict tutorial on the subject, look elsewhere.

Still, there are plenty of interesting, though time-consuming, recipes for things like green tea smoothies, crab and celery lettuce cups and Thai chicken endive boats. The usual nutritional information and shopping lists are included with each recipe, and if you’ve got plenty of time on your hands you might enjoy spending it making your own peanut butter or learning just what to do with chia seeds.

Real planning

There is plenty of angst in the business world when the term "Strategic Planning" pops up. This book presents planning in a straightforward manner as 3 integrated elements beginning with blue sky thinking continuing through to practical application and measurement. I highly recommend this book for those that have struggled with the strategic planning concept and "how do I really make it work"!

One of the Best on Strategic Planning

I still think this is one of the best books on strategic planning. Published in 1987, the book has the best description of the strategic planning process. One of the authors, George L. Morrissey, expanded the material into a three-book series entitled Morrisey on Planning in 1997. The first book of the series is A Guide to Strategic Thinking: Building YOur Planning Foundation, the second is A Guide to Long-Range Planning: Creating Your Strategic Journey, and the third is A Guide to Tactical Planning; Producing Your Short-Term Results.

In this series, George takes a potentially complex process (strategic, long range, and tactical planning) and links all the planning components together. He makes clear connections between strategy, long term objectives and plans and tactical decision making. He translates planning theory into meaningful, practical principles that all can understand (even the CEO!).

As a facilitator, I really appreciate George's explanation of how to plan. I have incorporated much of his philosopy in my practice and I am honored to recommend his books to all who are interested in successfully planning for the future.

When you read the book you get general idea of the history of the USA. It's not too detailed (for example, there is very little knowledge of certain presidents and events)but it covers all the important issues well. There is some amount of statistics but I believe they just emphesize the facts presented.
Only minus comes from the "aftermath" of 9/11. It seemed to convict the Clinton administration for causing the September attack and left other factors, such as, Bush senior and his administration (and the Gulf war) with little thought.
I didn't also like the particular sentence of how CIA should have involved more deeply in the observation of other countries:
"Sometimes, nations need to play dirty tricks."
But I guess it can be difficult to be objective when you live in the USA and have experienced a catastrophy such as 9/11. Still, as an European myself, I was quite dissapointed with the end. The end bothers me a bit but at least it gives me an alternative perspective to think about.

Tremendous writing. Very moving. Amazing phrases that are part of our civilization and which every educated person should know. On the other hand, the Song of Solomon and the book of Proverbs indicates God's attitude towards married sex, which is to say the least, favorable. Augustine deserted a common law wife so he could pursue neo-Platonic asceticism. Martin Luther rediscovered the Bible and got married. I don't like Augustine the man, and he is not a role model anyone should follow, but he writes compellingly about the love of God, while his deserted wife mourned.

I do love the conversational tone of this translation

This is the edition I have decided to read after reading many reviews for other translations. I do love the conversational tone of this translation, but it still captures Augustine's cerebral and philosophical and even contemplative, rambling, beautifully poetic ramblings. The references to verses in the bible in parentheses as opposed to end notes really is useful, and Augustine's command of Scripture is unparalleled. You get the idea that he is at both writing his true confessions, honest as they are about sex and other sins, as well as a love letter to God, a philosophy treatise, and autobiography, a testimony of his journey to Christianity, and a historical capsule of the life of a young, educated, almost-aristocratic, young man in the early church in Greece and Rome. This book should be considered high priority reading for anyone interested in learning about Christianity, its origins, as well as those studying in more serious intent, such as theology.
