Great Introduction To Critical Thinking

This book is straight-forward, easy to read and full of fun excercises as well as tons of quotes from notable historical personages and essays by leaders of the advertising field. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning about critcal thinking or anyone who is adept at critical thinking but wishes to improve their skills. The excercises provide endless practice and food for thought.

Why isn't this required reading at High Schools??

Buy it to improve yourself and society as a whole!

This book is odd

This was a text used for a critical thinking class (bachelors level) and the best way to explain it is that it feels like there should be a book the read before or with this book? It is informative but there are some parts that didn't make a lick of sense. It may not have helped that the instructor didn't teach/explain beyond the book but the book is not something to take on without guidance or for fun unless you are a masochist. It is thought provoking but I'm guessing there are better critical thinking texts out there.

A straightforward introduction to the craft and art of keeping and managing beehives for honey

University of Florida Extension Beekeeping Specialist Malcolm T. Sanford has combined his expertise with the late Richard E. Bonney's foundational "Beekeeping and Hive Management" instructional to create Storey's Guide to Keeping Honey Bees, a straightforward introduction to the craft and art of keeping and managing beehives for honey. Although intended especially to help neophytes get up to speed, Storey's Guide to Keeping Honey Bees is solid and thorough enough to offer plenty of tips, tricks, and techniques that long-time veterans will appreciate. Chapters address the necessary preparatory steps (from researching local community laws about bees to acquiring and learning how to use protective equipment to keeping emergency remedies for bee stings on hand and more), how to install a colony (two colonies are recommended for beginners, in case one colony suffers disaster), prevent diseases, harvest honey crops, and much more. "In rural areas, ensure that livestock are not located nearby (some tend to use beehives as scratching posts). Horses are a particular problem. Their odor seems to offend bees, and when stinging starts, horses often react violently and can injure themselves."

A dull and lacking narrative

This was a very poor representation of what beekeeping is actually like and in many cases he gives the worst possible solutions on how to fix common problems in the hives. An example of how useless this book is, is the question "how much honey should i leave on a hive during winter?" the author's response was "what do you think they need?" Many other problems are approached by either reasking the question or are just a new question in and of themselves. I would not even recommend this book to a novice as even simple tasks are not fully explained. Also the random quotes and filler are not only distracting but boring and uninformative. This book needs some serious revision or to be pulled off the shelves.

As a follow up to a comment left I recommend "the beekeeper a handbook" by Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile, it's great for beginners but also has good information for mid level beekeepers too.

Good overall, but lacking in a couple areas

First, don't expect to find a single book out there that will walk you through every single bee keeping process step by step. That said, this is certainly a valuable addition to your library of books on the topic.

One thing I did like is that the author recognizes that there are many different approaches to every aspect of keeping bees, and he does not say that one is right and the rest are wrong. He does make recommendations for the best approaches for beginners to use, but also recognizes that more experienced keepers may want to experiment.

This book does have lots of good pointers, especially for the beginner. Read it cover to cover, and you'll get a lot of good information.

Cons- when comparing keeping bees in the "north" vs the "south," the author is comparing bee keeping in USDA hardiness zone 6 to zone 7. I keep bees in zone 3, so by comparison, zone 6 is pretty mild. Information on keeping bees in places that are actually cold, like zone 3, and actually hot, like zone 8 or 9, should have been included.

About the Author
Back in 1961, I decided on a career in science rather than history after hearing President Kennedy announce that we were going to the Moon. I am fascinated by all aspects of science, and a specialist in optics, plasma physics and laser-produced plasmas. I have B.S. and M.S. degrees from MIT and a Ph.D. from Stanford in electrical engineering, have worked in various National Labs for many years, and later formed my own company, Photonic Associates, in Santa Fe. While I am actually a “rocket scientist,” having designed and built laser driven plasma engines for spacecraft, I firmly believe that you don’t have to complete Grade 24 to understand how things work. Ernest Rutherford said “if you can’t explain your physics to a barmaid, it’s probably not very good physics,” and I agree with that sentiment. I want to help you get over your fear of numbers and science. Read this book and see if I’ve been successful!.

A teaspoon of No Wonder You Wonder! makes Science and Engineering go down.

I have been a student and and graduate-student teacher of mathematics and physics for many years. I consider this book to be uniquely valuable for both teachers and students from middle- school to graduate-school. It is wonderfully illustrated with pictures, sketches, drawings or diagrams on nearly every page that, together with its clarity of presentation by a skilled writer with a lovely sense of humor, make "No Wonder You Wonder!"
a delightful and educational read. Most importantly, I expect that if this book could be provided to the teachers and students of our schools, the barrier between students and the study of science and engineering would be significantly improved.

Glad someone is thinking about the smarter kids in class . . .

Kind of an amazing textbook for the brighter kids in the class. It is not recommended as a general read unless you have time to dip in to a chapter now and then. Claude has a teenager's sense of humor and this lively book would be a welcome addition to any AP science class. The author is an internationally renowned expert in laser ablation who just might have the answer to space junk cluttering the heavens -- but you do not have to know that to read and enjoy the book. Each chapter is a non-cumulative look at a different aspect of the broad subject we call Physics, including some history as well as contemporary theory. And there is just enough math you pique your interest, so don't worry about that.

Good beginner book.

Being a beginner at portrait photography this was a good book to start with, the author went into good detail about body flow and placement. I wish there were more "Do This" "Not This" photos to demonstate the value of proper posing. I was really interested in small group photography (eg. mom, dad & kids, child/children with pet) and there was only one tiny section devoted to this which was a bummer for me. Putting that aside it is written very simply and easy to understand. I would recommend this to others.

Very good, but missing some needed illustrations and counter examples.

Overall, this is a great help to someone who needs a good grounding in posing for portrait photography. I think I got my money's worth out of it. I particularly appreciated his discussion about expressions. He has some good points in there.

I'm not sure why the title specifies it's just for digital photographers. I think everything in it is useful to film shooters, too.

It has two shortcomings as I saw it.

First, it needs more supporting images to go with the verbal description. Some labelled arrows to the sample images pointing out specifically what is being addressed and how would be great! There are a few examples of "bad" posing to illustrate some of the basic points at the beginning, but as the book went on, it seemed fewer and fewer were shown.

Second, there are times, especially in the leg posing section, where the author decided to use a verbal description of how to pose a foot or leg where an illustration of some kind is really necessary. The most poignant example is when he refers to the "front foot". Front with respect to WHAT? Does he mean closer to the camera? Does he mean it is further in front of the subject? Doesn't that depend on how the subject decides to place their feet before you pose them? Even a review of the sample images didn't yield much evidence. I gave up trying to figure it out. Here, a picture would truly be worth 1000 words.

Overall, though, a good book of basics; and certainly enough to get one started.

Great for Beginners

I liked this book because it used everyday normal folks to teach us how to take better photographs of people. This book is great for beginning photographers and had easy to learn techniques. Lots of good visuals to help in learning to take good photos.

About the Author

Graham Allan was a student of mathematics at Cambridge University, England, and obtained his PhD there in 1964. After periods as a Fellow at Cambridge, as a lecturer at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and as Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of Leeds, Graham returned to Cambridge as a lecturer in mathematics in 1978, and he became a Reader in Functional Analysis in 1980. Graham was a Fellow of Churchill College from 1978, Director of Studies in Mathematics from 1985, and Vice-Master of the College 1990-93.

This book presents an interdisciplinary examination of cross-Taiwan Strait relations and the complex dynamics at play in the region.

Since the election of Ma Ying-jeou as Taiwan’s president in 2008, the relationship across the Taiwan Strait―long viewed as one of Asia’s most volatile potential flashpoints―has experienced a remarkable d�tente. Whether the relationship has been truly transformed, however, remains an open question and the Taiwan Strait remains a central regional and global security issue. A return to turbulence in the Taiwan Strait could also add a new dimension of instability in the already tense maritime disputes in the East and South China Seas.

While the relationship across the Taiwan Strait remains critically important, it is also changing rapidly, and the chapters in this volume present new thinking to help make sense of complex cross-Strait dynamics. Specifically, these essays explore different security and/or globalization dimensions of China-Taiwan ties as well as the globalization-security linkages that have emerged. As the balance of power in Asia shifts dramatically, several chapters in this volume explore how traditional security forces are evolving. At the same time, there are new dynamics emerging as a consequence of globalization forces, such as the tremendous economic and social integration across the Taiwan Strait, and several chapters in this volume consider some of these new problems. Finally, several chapters consider the often under-researched dynamics associated with the globalization/security interface such as cyber threats, transnational criminal networks and the security spill-over impact of production globalization.

This book will of much interest to students of Chinese Politics, Asian Security, globalisation, diplomacy and International Relations.
