I used this book in a graduate course on compressible flow in about 1957. Without hesitation, I consider this the best textbook I have encountered in a 45 year engineering career. In later years I used it often in my work, and I still have it. I browse it occasionally when I want to be reminded how much fun being an engineer can be.

About the Author
Andrea Lunsford, Louise Hewlett Nixon Professor of English emerita and former Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, joined the Stanford faculty in 2000. Prior to this appointment, Lunsford was Distinguished Professor of English at The Ohio State University (1986-2000). She has also been Associate Professor and Director of Writing at the University of British Columbia (1977-86). Currently a member of the faculty of the Bread Loaf School of English, Professor Lunsford earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Florida and completed her Ph.D. in English at The Ohio State University (1977).
Professor Lunsford's scholarly interests include contemporary rhetorical theory, women and the history of rhetoric, collaboration and collaborative writing, current cultures of writing, intellectual property and composing, style, and technologies of writing. She has written or coauthored many books, including Essays on Classical Rhetoric and Modern Discourse; Singular Texts/Plural Authors: Perspectives on Collaborative Writing; and Reclaiming Rhetorica: Women in the History of Rhetoric, as well as numerous chapters and articles. For Bedford/St. Martin s, she is the author of The St. Martin's Handbook, The Everyday Writer, EasyWriter, and Writing in Action; the co-author (with John Ruszkiewicz) of Everything s an Argument and (with John Ruszkiewicz and Keith Walters) of Everything s an Argument with Readings; and the co-author (with Lisa Ede) of Writing Together: Collaboration in Theory and Practice.
Professor Lunsford has conducted workshops on writing and program reviews at dozens of North American universities, served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, as Chair of the Modern Language Association Division on Writing, and as a member of the MLA Executive Council."

The girl is a young Janice Gould, and the poems and narrations that follow constitute a remarkable work of sustained and courageous self-revelation, retracing the precarious emotional terrain of an adolescence shaped by a mother’s tough love and a growing consciousness of an ancestral and familial past.

In the first half of the book, “Tribal History,” Gould ingeniously repurposes the sonnet form to preserve the stories of her mother and aunt, who grew up when “muleback was the customary mode / of transport” and the “spirit world was present”—stories of “old ways” and places claimed in memory but lost in time. Elsewhere, she remembers her mother’s “ferocious, upright anger” and her unexpected tenderness (“Like a miracle, I was still her child”), culminating in the profound expression of loss that is the poem “Our Mother’s Death.”

In the second half of the book, “It Was Raining,” Gould tells of the years of lonely self-making and “unfulfilled dreams” as she comes to terms with what she has been told are her “crazy longings” as a lesbian: “It’s been hammered into me / that I’ll be spurned / by a ‘real woman,’ / the only kind I like.” The writing here commemorates old loves and relationships in language that mingles hope and despair, doubt and devotion, veering at times into dreamlike moments of consciousness. One poem and vignette at a time, Doubters and Dreamers explores what it means to be a mixed-blood Native American who grew up urban, lesbian, and middle class in the West.

Spelllbinding, beautifully written

Poems alternating with vignettes are spellbinding. A short, compelling, beautifully written book that opens a window on what it's like to be a lesbian and mixed-race in a native American homeland, a Western ranch, and the urban West while searching for identity. A story that sticks with you long after you've finished the book. Gould writes masterfully.

About the Author

Jos Stam is a senior research scientist with Autodesk. He was born in the Netherlands and educated in Geneva, Switzerland, where he received dual bachelor degrees in computer science and pure mathematics. In 1989 he moved to Toronto, where he completed his master’s and PhD in computer science. His research spans several areas of computer graphics: natural phenomena, physics-based simulation, rendering, and surface modeling, especially subdivision surfaces. He has published papers in all of these areas in journals and at conferences. In 2005 he received the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, one of the most prestigious awards in computer graphics. He also won two Technical Achievement Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and has been featured in Wired magazine.

Great book, wrong publisher.

This is a great book. Computational fluid dynamics is not easy and there are very few, if any, math or physics books that cover the material with real implementation in mind - the few I've come across are terribly boring. This is a different kind of book and is a nice supplement to the author's well-known paper on implementing fluid solvers.

The missing star is for the choice of publisher and quality of the illustrations..... CRC Press is hardly coding hacker mainstream and is very expensive. Some of the illustrations/images are of very poor quality, as are some of the code listings.

Still, a very good guide to getting started with fluid animation.

About the Author
Donald Hislop is a lecturer in the Management School at the University of Sheffield. Prior to this he worked as both a lecturer in Sheffield Business School at Sheffield Hallam University, and as a researcher at Warwick Business School. His current research interests are in the nature of
organizational knowledge, the limits to managing knowledge, and debates on how new forms of work organization are changing the experience of work.
