Rachel White was born and raised in L.A., California, but moved north for college. An avid reader for as long as she can remember, she started writing in high school and hasn’t stopped since. Her favorite genre is probably fantasy, but she’ll devour a good book no matter what shelf it belongs to, and she takes an equally experimental approach to her own writing, hopping between ideas, genres, and stories as it suits her. Along with writing, Rachel has been drawing since she was a little girl and also loves baking, particularly bread; don’t ask her about her sourdough starter unless you really want to know. fun one off for me

I was intrigued by this novel, it seemed to offer something a bit different, a blend of m/m romance, with sorcery and magic, and a mystery in which to use those abilities.
Well, poor Demetrious, he’d been through such a lot, bullied as a child by an overbearing, immoral, wealthy father and then spent all his money defending himself from the accusations that he poisoned him. That took five years ( guess fantasy trials take as long sometimes as those in the real world!) All that time he was grieving at the loss of his long time friend and lover, and holding tight to an awful secret. He’s so full of sorrow he comes across as beaten, given up in spirit and just going through the motions of living, just marking time. Thoughts of his dead lover still dominate him and he misses him terribly. Then he gets called to the investigation of the prince’ on-going poisoning...and meets Rodger. There’s an attraction between them from first glance, but things take a while to develop, going one step forward and two back. Rodgers has a past that affects him as does Demetrious, though in a different way.
Its a fun read, with chances for lots of magic and spells, and the mystery keeps going from one suspect to another. There are developments that cause problems for Rodger and Demetrious just as they finally seem to be moving forward, and that was so sad. I understood both points of view and it’s a tough call for anyone to make. Fortunately they get past it. I was surprised how often people had private talks in the midst of an investigation – Demetrious and Rodgers astonished me when they broke off in the middle of one where they and others were working on a theory, and simply moved to one side of the room while talks continued just so they could discuss their problems Surprised smile
I enjoyed this novel, but it’s not one that kept me glued to the page, or that I would re read. It was something different for me, and on that basis it filled what I wanted, but this kind of magic and story isn’t really what I want to read all the while. I didn’t guess “who dunnit” so to speak, that was a real surprise – but that’s good! There were a couple of gentle m/m scenes but not overly done, and did fit the story.
Stars: three, a fun, one off read for me.

4 stars for Rachel White’s Blood Tells (Less Than Three Press LLC)

Rachel White’s Blood Tells is the first gay novel I’ve read in quite a while, and I’m glad I did. I read it in two sittings – I would have read it in one but was interrupted mid-book – and did NOT figure out who the primary antagonist was until the hero did. That’s one thing I liked about the book. Clues abound and none of them are misleading, but the mystery remains until it’s solved.
I also like that the adventure/suspense and romantic plots of Blood Tells grow entirely out of the characters’ motivations, personalities, and histories. The characters are well drawn, interesting, likeable, and relatively complex, though I do wonder a bit that, although fathers are present, no mothers are. This could be an interesting feature of this fantasy world, where sorcerers are abundant but suspect, the monarchy and army and buildings feel feudal, and spells and curses mix equally with guns and trolleys, but both the fantasy elements and the setting in general feel far less important than the characters and plots.
In any case, I’ll be watching for more from Rachel White.

Even sorcerers get the blues

"Blood Tells" is an excellent, exciting, engaging read. In it, Rachel White has imagined and brought to life an intriguing sword-and-sorcery tale with characters who, even though they exist in a somewhat similar but mostly very different world, act in very human, and sometimes deeply flawed, ways. There are, of course, the sex scenes that we more or less expect in books like this, but Ms. White writes so well and her story is so interesting that you may find yourself hurrying over these interludes, so that you can get on to what's happening next. For me, the only negative in the book is the poor level of proofreading and editing, a real disservice to Ms. White's storytelling gifts.
